Chuzhou City, historically known as “Tuzhong,” “Qingliu,” and “Xinchang,” is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province. Located in eastern Anhui, its eastern border adjoins Jiangsu Province, while its southern and northern borders neighbor Nanjing, Yangzhou, Huai'an, and Suqian. To the west, it borders Bengbu City, Huainan City, Hefei City, and Ma'anshan City from north to south. The city covers a total area of 13,500 square kilometers.
Chuzhou derives its name from the Chuzhou River, historically known as the “Tuzhong River.” The city evolved from the ancient “Tuzhong” region. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, Chuzhou was first under the jurisdiction of Wu and later under Chu, hence the saying “the head of Wu and the tail of Chu.” Established as a prefecture in the third year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (583 AD), Chuzhou has a history spanning over 1,400 years. It served as the imperial capital region during the Six Dynasties period, earning the titles “the key to Jinling and the bulwark of the Yangtze and Huai rivers” and the praise “embodying the essence of Wu and Chu, surpassing the grandeur of Huai and Yang.” In December 1992, Chuzhou was established as a prefecture-level city under provincial jurisdiction. The city experiences a subtropical humid monsoon climate characterized by distinct seasons, pronounced monsoons, high humidity, and rainfall coinciding with the warm season. Its topography is diverse, predominantly hilly and rolling terrain with limited plains. Chuzhou is a central city in the Yangtze River Delta region and a key member of both the Hefei and Nanjing metropolitan areas. Its transportation network is highly accessible, with the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu Railway, and expressways including Hefei-Nanjing, Nanjing-Luohe, Nanjing-Lianyungang, Hefei-Xuzhou, Chuzhou-Huai'an, and Chuzhou-Ma'anshan traversing the city. The city's leading industries are advanced photovoltaics and new energy storage.
