- Hefei-
Hefei, abbreviated as “He,” historically known as Luzhou and Luyang, is a prefecture-level city, provincial capital, and megacity in Anhui Province. Located in East China, central Anhui, and the western wing of the Yangtze River Delta, it surrounds Chaohu Lake. The city features a subtropical monsoon humid climate with three main landforms: hilly terrain, low mountains and residual hills, and low-lying plains. Its total area spans 11,445 square kilometers. As of March 2025, Hefei administers 4 districts, 4 counties, and oversees 1 county-level city. By the end of 2024, its permanent resident population reached 10.002 million.
The Hefei region stands as one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, named for the Dongfei and Nanfei Rivers originating here. Administrative divisions were first established during the Qin Dynasty. In 583 AD (the third year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty), Hefei County was reestablished. From then until the end of the Qing Dynasty, Hefei served as the seat of government for Luzhou Commandery, Prefecture, and Circuit. In September 1945, the provincial capital of Anhui was relocated to Hefei. In 1952, Anhui was reestablished as a province, and Hefei became the provincial capital of Anhui in the People's Republic of China. Hefei serves as a vital administrative center, commercial hub, and military stronghold in the Jianghuai region. It is renowned as the “throat of the Huai River's right flank and the teeth of the south of the Yangtze,” the “leading prefecture of Jianghuai and strategic crossroads of Wu and Chu,” and the “hometown of the Three Kingdoms era, birthplace of Bao Zheng, and cradle of the Huai Army.”
Hefei is designated by the State Council as a key central city in the Yangtze River Delta region, a national comprehensive transportation hub, a base for advanced manufacturing in Central China, a regional hub for scientific and technological innovation, and an international air cargo distribution center. It also serves as the central city of the G60 Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, a dual strategic node city for the Belt and Road Initiative and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, a comprehensive national science center, a member city of the World Science Cities Alliance, and a national pilot city for science and technology innovation. Hefei's leading industries include new display technologies, new energy vehicles, integrated circuits, advanced photovoltaics, and new energy storage.
